Yes. Complete beginners can learn to surf in Taghazout without any previous experience. Beginner surf lessons take place in waist-deep to chest-deep water at sandy-bottom beaches such as Panorama Beach and Crocro Beach, where waves break gently and consistently. Each lesson starts with a briefing on the sand covering safety, paddling and the pop-up. Most first-time surfers stand on the board during their first session.
Nearly everyone we take out has never surfed before. That is the normal case here, not the exception, and you will not be the only nervous person on the beach that morning. Your instructor goes through everything on the sand first — how to lie on the board, where to put your feet, what to do if you fall, which is mostly nothing. Then you go in, and the water is about waist deep. If you are worried, say so at the briefing. Your instructor will keep you in the shallower part, and you will still catch waves, they just arrive a little smaller.
Strong swimming ability is not required for beginner surf lessons in Taghazout. Lessons take place in waist-deep to chest-deep water close to shore, where standing up is always possible, and the surfboard itself floats and is attached to the ankle by a leash. Being comfortable in water is recommended. Instructors stay in the water with the group throughout the session.
This is the question people are most embarrassed to ask, so let us answer it properly. You will be standing for most of the lesson. The board is large, made of foam, and attached to your ankle — if you come off it, it is right there. Your instructor is in the water beside you, not watching from the sand. What matters is not being panicked when a wave goes over your head, and that is a feeling most people get used to within the first twenty minutes.
Group surf lessons with Taghazout Discovery are limited to a maximum of 6 to 8 participants per instructor. Smaller groups allow individual correction after most waves. Group size is one of the clearest differences between surf schools in the Taghazout area, and lessons with ten or more participants per instructor are common elsewhere.
Six to eight is small enough that your instructor sees each of your waves. This is worth checking wherever you book, not only with us — if a school says “small group” and means twelve, the attention thins out fast and you spend the session waiting. In a group our size you can expect a correction after most waves, and the gaps between sets give a tip time to actually land before the next one comes.
There is no upper age limit for beginner surf lessons in Taghazout. Beginner lessons take place in shallow water with soft-top boards and do not require athletic ability or prior fitness training. Participants in their forties, fifties and sixties learn to surf in Taghazout regularly. Paddling technique and wave timing matter more than physical strength.
We hear this one a lot, usually in a slightly apologetic tone, and the honest answer is that age is rarely the thing that decides how a first lesson goes. Some of the most determined first-timers we have had were well past sixty. Surfing a beginner wave is not about strength — the wave does the work, and your job is mostly to be in the right place and stand up at the right moment. If you have a bad knee or a stiff back, tell your instructor before you go in and they will change how you get to your feet.
The beach for a surf lesson in Taghazout is chosen each morning according to swell, tide and the group’s experience level. Beginner lessons usually take place at Panorama Beach, Crocro Beach Tamraght or Taghazout Bay, all of which have sandy bottoms. The famous point breaks around Taghazout, including Anchor Point and Hash Point, are not used for beginner lessons. Meeting point is Taghazout centre at 10:00.
There is no fixed beach, and that is deliberate. The right one changes with the tide and the swell, sometimes from one day to the next, and picking it is the part of the job you cannot learn from a website. If you have seen photos of Anchor Point and quietly wondered what you have signed up for — those waves are around the headland, and beginners never go near them.
When swell is too large for beginners, surf lessons in Taghazout are moved to a more sheltered beach rather than cancelled. Instructors assess conditions each morning. If no beach is safe for a beginner lesson, Taghazout Discovery contacts participants via WhatsApp in advance to reschedule at no cost. Lessons are not run in conditions unsuitable for the group’s level.
This happens a handful of times each winter, and we would rather move you than put you in water that is not right. If we message you the evening before or early that morning, it is because we already checked, not because we are being cautious for the sake of it. Rescheduling costs nothing and we will find you another morning within your stay if there is one.
